Listed below are the different committees responsible for certain activities at Beth Shalom. We hope that you will consider finding out more about them. It is a wonderful way to meet new people in the congregation and to become involved in shaping your Jewish experience.
Archive Committee
This committee will develop a plan for the preservation and availability of Beth Shalom historical documentation pertaining to operations, policies, procedures as well as pictures, mementos, and publications.
Budget & Finance Committee
The Budget and Finance Committee assists the treasurer in overseeing the finances of the congregation including the investment of congregation funds and the modification and execution of the financial policies of the congregation.
Caring Committee
The Caring Committee is responsible for the physical, emotional, and spiritual support of our Beth Shalom community. The Caring Committee helps Beth Shalom members celebrate joyous events and it also helps members deal with trying times. It supports the Beth Shalom community in performing mitzvot such as Bikur Kholim (visiting the sick), Nikhum Avelim (comforting the mourner), Nikhum Metzukah (comforting the distressed), and Shalom Tinok (welcoming a new baby).
Education Committee
The Education Committee assists the Rabbi and the Education Director in planning educational programs from cradle to adult. At Beth Shalom these programs are always changing to meet the needs of the members. For many years we have had: Sunday School, Hebrew School, Adult Education, and the Shabbaton. Tiny Tot Tuesday was added as well as Beshty. The committee meets the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in the library.
Energy Committee
Evaluates all systems in Beth Shalom for best utilization of all energy related areas and upgrade as needed.
Expansion Committee
The expansion committee is charged with the responsibility of developing a facility that meets Beth Shalom's long term needs. The expansion committee consolidates requirements and develops the best solution possible taking into account multiple priorities. The committee will bring proposals to the board of directors for decision and than act as project manager for construction.
Information Systems Committee
This committee is charged with developing our long term information systems plan while maintaining our current operational systems. The committee is responsible for the hardware, software, telephone, internet and other systems technology required by the temple. They also manage the temple website regarding design, content and updating information on a scheduled basis.
Interior Design Committee
Responsible for all interior additions or changes to building.
Landscape Committee
Oversees the continuous upkeep of all the outdoors grounds.
Library Committee
The Library Committee manages the temple's library. This involves cataloguing the current collection and new submissions. The committee also develops plans for the library's future. Our library consists of two parts. In the library room, we have Jewish related topics of fiction and non-fiction for adults. The Youth Library is located in the classroom hall.
VIP Committee
The VIP Committee strives to create an atmosphere that encourages members of Beth Shalom to continue their active participation in all aspects of temple life for as long as they reside in the community. Its responsibilities are to: promote temple involvement and sense of belonging, improve communication between leadership, staff and members, monitor member status, and collaborate with other committees. They meet every month on the fourth Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the temple conference room.
Music Committee
This committee is charged with identifying and locating music and musicians for regular Shabbat services, and all special musical services including Shabbat Shira, Chanukah, Pesach, S’lichot, as well as our largest choral and instrumental event, the High Holy Days services. The committee chair arranges for practices, provides for the sheet music, coordinates with other musical entities of the temple and acts as teacher/leader for many musical needs. New songs and tunes are also taught to the congregation as a result of the music contributions. It is also the goal to utilize the many talents of our membership, to enhance our musical experience. The committee chair meets monthly with the Ritual Committee, to plan and coordinate the music program.
New Member Committee
The New Member Committee is responsible for welcoming new families and assisting them on becoming a part of the Beth Shalom community. This includes everything from a family’s application through their first 12 months of membership. The committee meets every month on the second Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the temple conference room.
Newsletter Committee
The Newsletter Committee works to create a monthly newsletter for Beth Shalom. This includes gathering articles, information and advertising as well as working to improve the content of the newsletter to ensure that the Beth Shalom community is well informed.
Prospective Member Committee
The Prospective Member Committee is committed to all aspects of new member recruitment at Beth Shalom. They maintain communication channels with all prospective members while establishing outreach recruitment programs. The committee meets monthly on the first Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the temple conference room.
PTO for Religious School
The PTO supports the Education Director, the school, and the students throughout the year for holidays and special occasions. Each class has a room parent that works with the teacher and the families in that class to provide any assistance necessary for a successful holiday celebration, field trip, family education or any class activity.
Ritual Committee
This committee is charged with the planning and enhancement of ritual services including Shabbat, High Holy Days, holidays, and other religious observances. The committee provides guidelines and procedures for religious events and family celebrations such as conversions, births, Hebrew naming, etc. Members of the committee work closely with the Rabbi, bringing his ideas to life, as well as those contributions of committee members. Examples of this include assisting the Rabbi with the publication of Beth Shalom’s own Siddurs, organizing a group of congregants to participate in a tour of Israel, led by our Rabbi, and honoring our members who have been married for 50 years or more with a ceremony and celebration. Ritual also is charged with maintaining our ritual items such as the Torah scrolls, and has made contributions such as providing the temple with a Yahrzeit board and prayer books. Ritual meets formally on a monthly basis.
Security Committee
Install security procedures and maintain integrity of temple.
Social Committee
The social committee is responsible for helping create opportunities for us to socialize above and beyond our typical ritual and traditions. Current events the social committee plans include a family Hanukkah party, the adult Purim party, a Super Bowl party and other family game nights.
Social Action Committee
Members of the Social Action Committee coordinate and plan volunteer activities in the spirit of tikkun olam. The Committee has relationships with several organizations in the Cary area and other North Carolina-based as well as international groups.
