Adult/Family Education

Beth Shalom Adult Educational Programs

The role of Jewish education is to educate and inspire all people to be members of our community. Our programs seek to raise concepts and address basic questions that recur throughout one’s lifetime. Appropriately addressing these issues from a Reform Jewish perspective at each developmental stage fosters both a strong Jewish identity and a connection to the Jewish world at large.

Adult Education

Throughout the year, various Adult Education programs are offered by Rabbi Edery as well as lay people of our community. Some examples are Hebrew language and reading, holiday classes, and Taste of Judaism. Family Education for each grade is offered monthly, discussing topics that are relevant to the curriculum of each grade in Religious school.

Ongoing programs include:

Tanakh Talks Open to all, led by Rabbi Edery, Mondays from 10:30 – noon. – Weekly discussions around Biblical texts.

Celebrate at Home – A review of the central themes, meanings, and rituals of the Jewish holidays, so you can celebrate them and enjoy them at home. Obviously, this includes a cooking session for the favorite dishes and recipes of each festival. Led by Rabbi Edery and Sally Zenick, for High Holidays, Hanukah, and Passover.

Sunday Study and Debate Sessions – Adult study sessions led by Rabbi Edery and guest speakers will be held through the year on Sunday mornings, in series of 2 or 3 sessions for each topic. Some of the topics will be: The Women’s Torah; Talmud Study; Why We Pray - What For?; A Jew Reads The New Testament; Jews And Social Activism In America; The Top 5 Biblical Ideas. These sessions are open to all, and require no previous knowledge; each session is self-contained. The specific date and times for these sessions will be set in our calendar at the beginning of the year. These sessions are free for all members ($3 donation for non-members).

Anyone with specific interest in topics to be covered, please contact the main office at (919) 858 – 7777.
