There are so many opportunities to become involved in the community. This information highlights social groups and activities that occur at least once a month. All members are encouraged to participate.
Sisterhood
The mission of the Sisterhood of Beth Shalom is to promote a sense of Jewish Community, fellowship and camaraderie among women in the synagogue. All women in the congregation are members of the Sisterhood. The group engages in fundraising activities to support temple programs, is responsible for the temple gift shop and invitation sales, offers catering for B’nei Mitzvah, and sponsors monthly social gatherings. Past activities have included movie nights, brunches, bowling, art activities, and events coordinated in conjunction with the Men’s Club. All members are notified of upcoming events through email and the temple newsletter.
Men’s Club
All congregation men are members of the Men’s Club. The group meets regularly on the second Sunday of each month for breakfast. Meetings have featured guest speakers, lively discussions, and an opportunity to meet congregants. The Men’s club also sponsors family activities which in the past have included attendance at sporting events, (Durham Bulls and Carolina Hurricanes), and family picnics. The Men’s Club supports temple activities through volunteer efforts and fundraising. Friendship, fellowship, camaraderie and food!
Buddy Family Activities
The Buddy Family Program pairs new members with a congregation family to introduce them to Beth Shalom. This will hopefully provide an opportunity to experience activities at Beth Shalom as well as create connections between newer and experienced members of Beth Shalom.
Duplicate Bridge Club
The Duplicate Bridge group meets monthly, on the second Saturday of the month at 7:30pm, at Beth Shalom for cards, socializing, and food! If you don't have a partner, we will help you find one. Additional players are always welcome!
Book Clubs
There are two active book clubs at Beth Shalom. All members are invited to attend and are encouraged to suggest books which address Jewish themes. Both fiction and non-fiction titles are read and discussed. Book choices are decided upon by the members at each meeting. Genres have included historical fiction, current events, Jewish authors, history, and Jewish literature. Discussions are lively and informative and provide a welcome social context. The morning group meets on the first Friday of the month at the temple in the sanctuary at 10:30am. The evening group meets every other month at 7:00 pm (date is determined by the members) and is generally hosted at the home of a member.
Mommy, Daddy & Me
Mommy, Daddy & Me is a playgroup for Beth Shalom children and their parents. It is targeted for children ages 0-5 years old and meets at least once each month. Members take turns hosting events at local parks, homes or other fun locations. Siblings, and parents and caregivers are always welcome. The coordinator determines schedules.
